- Ecc. 9:5-6
- Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 (New American Standard Bible)

- 1 Cor. 15:16-22
- 1 Corinthians 15:16-22 (New International Version)
For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
|
- Explanation
- Basically this means we believe that people are completely mortal, no part of us is immortal. When we die the breath of life returns to God, but all that was uniquely us is truly dead. God though has the power to resurrect us from the dead in the future, like He did with Jesus. God created Adam with the dust of the earth and the breath of life from God, so when we die we return to the earth and the breath of life returns to God (Psa. 146:4 - "His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.").
There is a passage in Ecclesiastes 9 that's about a lack of hope for those who die without a relationship with God, but verses 5 and 6 describe the state of death ("For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing... Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished..."). And in 1 Corinthians 15:18 death is likened to falling asleep ("...those also who have fallen asleep in Christ...").

- Col. 3:1-4
- Colossians 3:1-4 (New International Version)
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

8. The literal physical resurrection of the righteous dead. |
- 1 Cor. 15:50-55
- 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 (New American Standard Bible)
Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.
"O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"
- 1 Cor.
- John 5:26-29
- John 5:26-29 (New American Standard Bible)
"For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
